Information
about the two artists:
LUJO VODOPIVEC
Born in 1952, Lujo Vodopivec attended the Academy of Fine Arts in
Ljubljana and graduated in 1974. Lujo also completed his postgraduate
studies in 1976. As a recipient of the Barnett Newman Foundation Scholarship,
Lujo went on to study in New York with William Tucker and Sidney Geist
at the New York Studio School (1979 - 80). Lujo commenced his academic
career as a teacher at the University of Ljubljana, Academy of Fine
Arts in 1984 and now holds the distinguished position as Head of Sculpture.
Lujo Vodopivec's exhibiting career spans thirty years. Lujo has been
represented in many solo and group exhibitions throughout eastern
and western Europe and is represented in many important public and
private collections. In Australia, his work has only been seen in
Western Australia at the Gomboc Gallery just outside of Perth.
Within the work of Lujo Vodopivec, there is a strong combination of
sculptural elements and installation. One of his favourite elements
is the rotund and preposterously un-equine horse. In his sculpture
'Parcours', the plump horses are confronted and perhaps confounded
by the brightly painted hurdle. In this work there are elements of
displacement and integration that throw open a number of questions
to the viewer. The current interest in Sculpture within Australia
with the National Sculpture Prize, Sculpture by the Sea and the Sydney's
Sculpture 2002, has opened a whole new dialogue that is beginning
to unravel, and Lujo Vodopivec's inclusion within the Francophone
Festival at Customs House Sydney must surely contribute to that debate.
EVA
HEIMER
Eva Heimer deals with abstraction in colour and purpose as a mathematician
deals with the proposition of an intriguing equation. There is certain
geometry in the composition of her paintings that goes deeper than
the golden mean. In some ways, Eva Heimer, in the construction of
her paintings, taps into a sacred geometry and combines it with carefully
chosen tertiary colours that produce small, sensual triumphs of structure
and harmony. Her works, that initially appear to have a random nature,
are laden with concentration and are so carefully balanced that there
is a sense that each colour has its own weight without which, form
and structure would be lost.
With no titles, there are few options for the viewer, yet these small
abstractions make big statements and arrest one's concentration with
the confidence and surety of an artist who knows her medium. This
is the first time that Eva Heimer's work has been shown in Sydney
Australia. In June 2002 Eva's paintings will be on display with New
Zealand Artist Liz Coates, in the Sir Hermann Black Gallery, Sydney
University, Darlington. See upcoming Events Page for further details.
